November Artists in our Meeting Room

Kathleen Kenneally:
Sometimes tidy, sometimes not. Sometimes frustrating, most times fun. It is all part of the creative process as a “latecomer” to reading about art, looking at art, talking about art, and making art. Exciting!

I have been learning about painting more seriously in the past three years and, happily, more often in the past year. I have played with pastels, been wooed by watercolors, dabbled in oils, but am currently enjoying the antics of acrylics.

I am inspired by pathways, whether on land or water, so beautifully prominent on the Cape. My love for walking and kayaking have left imprints that motivate and challenge me to capture them on canvas. Composition, value, contrast, light, perspective, atmospheric conditions, color theory….so much comes into play. The blank canvas can be intimidating. Now though, with more time, easy access to on-line info, and a few classes along the way, there is a growing comfort and confidence in “just going for it”.

Kathleen has recently stepped away from a 20-year career as a massage therapist. However, she continues to engage a similar tactile sense through painting.

Joyce A. Sullivan:
Seeing the beauty, the happenstance and humor in day-to-day activities provides ample material to keep my journals full. Sometimes I focus on capturing in sketches what is immediately in front of me; other times, I just want to play with an abundance of color and collage pieces to see what happens, the “what if….”, so vital in the creative process.

My journal pages reflect images of the world around me – my gardens, my pets, the animals that visit the yard and the people I observe. I hope my work will inspire viewers to look a little more closely for the wonders in their world.

Joyce taught elementary school for 35 years; has always been interested in art and has nurtured this interest through a variety of art classes.

New England Ghost Ship

Saturday, October 21st at 11:30 a.m.

Two days after Christmas in 1738, a British merchant ship traveling from Rotterdam to Philadelphia grounded in a blizzard on the northern tip of Block Island, twelve miles off the Rhode Island coast. Shortly after the wreck, rumors began to circulate that the passengers had been mistreated by the ship’s crew and by some of the islanders. The stories persisted, transforming over time as stories do and, in less than a hundred years, two terrifying versions of the event had emerged..fueled by reports of a fiery ghost ship first seen drifting in Block Island Sound on the one-year anniversary of the wreck. These tales became known as the legend of the Palatine, the name given to the ship in later years, when its original name had been long forgotten.

So how did the rumors begin? What really happened to the Princess Augusta and the passengers she carried on her final, fatal voyage? Through years of painstaking research, Jill Farinelli reconstructs the origins of one of New England’s most chilling maritime mysteries.

Please call the library at 508-760-6219 to register for this program.

Artist Brenda Fernandez displaying in our Meeting Room

October 2023

Brenda Fernandez is an Abstract, Collage & Mixed Media artist. She expresses her art through bold colors, energy and emotion. She begins her paintings by putting words, markings and shapes on the substrate of choice. On her journey, she has taken art classes and retreats and paints as often as she can. Brenda is a member of Provincetown Art Association and Museum and has sold many pieces of her art. She is inspired by being alive and feeling the freedom of expressing herself through painting.

Thursday, August 24th at 6:00 p.m.

Author Don Wilding will host a presentation and discussion of his latest book Cape Cod and the Portland Gale of 1898. On the night of November 26, 1898, with a killer storm of historic proportions approaching, the steamer Portland set out from Boston. By the following night, the winter hurricane sent the vessel to the depths of Massachusetts Bay off Cape Cod, claiming nearly two hundred lives. On the Cape, a few dozen victims of the Portland disaster washed ashore, while ships piled up in harbors, high tides swept away railroad tracks, and the landscape and beaches were changed forever. Several Cape Cod mariners went to sea and never returned. Don Wilding revisits this disaster and the heroic deeds of the U.S. Life-Saving Service and the Cape’s citizenry in what came to be known as “The Portland Gale.”
